Get Rich Stay Rich

Martin and Joan's book, Get Rich, Stay Rich, introduces the principles of wealth creation. The book, published by Allen and Unwin, is now available in bookstore throughout Australia and New Zealand. Excerpts from Chapter 9 are reproduced below with permission from the publisher.

The dream’s the thing!

In defining your dream (the why of your financial freedom), remember that numbers (things like having $2 million in ten years, for example) are your goals. Numbers are your targets. They are important to have and keep in mind (and on paper as well!). But numbers are only numbers—it is the vision or dream of yourself enjoying financial freedom that will really motivate you and keep you going when things get tough. Nobody gets out of bed for a number! Not many of us are motivated by a few figures written down on a piece of paper. Most of us will be motivated by a dream of having and doing what we desire, being and becoming whatever we feel we are meant to be, by a desire to make a contribution and leave something better behind, and to take care of those who we love.

.... Too few of us take the time to really think about what we truly want in life—we are too often focused on just getting through the week, paying the next Visa bill, wishing for Friday, or hanging out for the next holiday. Many of us put more effort into purchasing a new fridge or remodelling the bathroom than we put into planning for the rest of our lives. We firmly believe, however, that you can have what you want for the future—and that you should have what you want. Clarifying a dream for your future life is important work and not to be taken lightly. If you are unused to this kind of thinking, it can take a while to work through what is really important to you. And, of course, what matters may change over time. That is your prerogative—you can keep changing or upgrading your dream. But at any point in time, it is important to know what
you are striving towards. Showing you how to do it is the easy part; the most difficult thing for most people is to be so clear about what they want—the endgame—that they always have the
energy and the drive required to overcome their fears, blockages and ‘buts’!

Knockers will tell you that you don’t have to be wealthy to be free. It’s simply not true... Someone who is wealthy can help their parents when they are old and need care, and help their children when they need it. Wealthy people have those choices—those who are not wealthy often do not. Undoubtedly, people can content themselves with very little, but it often means settling for a very constrained life.

Wealth gives you choices - the ability to choose the life you want. The financially free have bigger lives.
